Congratulations, Joe Swinbank!

Congratulations to our own co-founder and partner Joe Swinbank for being named a 2018 Distinguished Alumnus of Texas A&M University, the highest honor bestowed on a former student of the university.

Since its inception in 1962, only 281 of Texas A&M’s 477,000 former students have been recognized with the prestigious award. Presented jointly by the university and the Association of Former Students, the award recognizes Aggies who have achieved excellence in their chosen professions and made meaningful contributions to the university and their local communities.

Swinbank was notified about the award at a Feb. 23 event in Bryan. Recipients are notified in a series of surprise announcements throughout the spring and formally honored at an Oct. 5 awards gala at Reed Arena.

“In naming Joe to this prestigious list of Aggies, Texas A&M formally recognizes what we at Sprint have always known—that Joe is a one-of-a-kind, generous leader whose accomplishments and impact on those around him are immeasurable.” Sprint Waste Services President Dave Nelson said. “He is an inspiration to me and many others here in our Sprint family.”

Swinbank earned his bachelor of science degree in agriculture economics in 1974, starting his first company while still an undergraduate student at the university. Today, the Sprint Companies and the flagship company Sprint Waste Services serve customers across the Gulf Coast and beyond, employing more than 600 and encompassing an array of holdings in waste management, construction, industrial services and real estate.

Swinbank and his wife Shirley are generous benefactors of Texas A&M University, regularly supporting the university’s agriculture economics and rural entrepreneurship programs. He also serves as a “Prof for a Day” each fall in the agriculture economics department.

Congratulations to Joe and the Swinbank family!
