Lending a Helping Haul to Spring Branch ISD Ag Students

The Houston area has some of the largest and most active agriculture education programs in the country, teaching middle and high schoolers about farming and life lessons while helping students to raise valuable funds for college. So when one area Future Farmers of America (FFA) program was challenged with a continuing waste problem, we were happy to help.

Spring Branch Independent School District’s Agriculture Science Center Farm affords students the opportunity to learn about farming in an impressive hands-on setting, providing classrooms and labs, a show barn, animal pens to house hundreds of student projects each year, and acres of surrounding pasture. Students raise chickens, turkeys, rabbits, goats, lambs, heifers, steers and swine on the 17-acre farm, but that many animals produce a large amount of composted manure, and with time the amount became too large to handle on the farm’s pastures. The program struggled to find a viable disposal solution.

We were happy to step in to donate the right equipment for the job, as well as hauling services to get the compost to the landfill. A 40-yard roll-away Dumpster and several hauls did the trick. Nick Gonzales, Spring Branch Ag Science teacher and FFA adviser, said the FFA chapter is grateful to have the five-year accumulation removed and problem solved.

“Thanks to everyone who came together to help the students, the facility is now clean and parasite free to begin a new FFA season,” Gonzales said. “It is supporters like you that have empowered our students and families to be able to participate at a high level at livestock shows at the local, county and major show levels. The students of Spring Branch FFA are proud to have great people like you as a part of our community. Thank you very much for everything you have done for our kids!”

The season culminated Feb. 2–3 at the 40th Annual Spring Branch FFA Show & Sale, during which the students’ projects were shown and sold to benefit the FFA and student scholarships. Congratulations to all the hard-working students, families and Spring Branch ISD staff for a successful season and a job well done!
