Sprint Waste Continues Support of YMCA Four Corners Programs

When you see first hand the many community programs made possible by the Fort Bend Family YMCA and YMCAs all over Houston, it’s not hard to understand why we’re on board as a partner. But we’re particularly proud of the Four Corners Park and Recreation Center and the YMCA services available right in our backyard.

Sprint’s YMCA support goes back to 2002 when we donated 15 acres of land adjacent to the Sprint Fort Bend County Landfill for use as a park and recreation center. “We cleared the land, installed a well and street lighting, and helped with construction to open the park, helping to add facilities and support Y programs and staff since the opening,” says Will Swinbank, Sprint Waste Services cofounder and partner. “The county and many community leaders came together back then to make Four Corners happen, and we’re happy to help continue valuable community programs there.”

Today, Four Corners Park and Recreation Center at 15700 Old Richmond Road in Sugar Land operates under the Fort Bend County park system and includes regulation soccer and baseball/softball fields, a half-mile walking trail, playground equipment, basketball and volleyball courts, outdoor pavilions, and a community center for meetings, events and YMCA programs.

In addition to the fields and courts that make sports and educational programs available to the community, the YMCA runs an after-school outreach program as well as summer day camps at Four Corners that cater to children who might not otherwise be able to afford them.

Swinbank says the decision to provide ongoing support of the Fort Bend Family YMCA and the programs at Four Corners is an easy one for the company. “The programs at Four Corners help strengthen families right in our neighborhood, and we’re happy this land will make fun and healthy activities available to the community for many years to come.”

Pam Filip, community executive director at the Fort Bend Family YMCA calls Sprint’s support at Four Corners tremendous: “Thank you so much for your continued support and generous donation to the Fort Bend Family YMCA. Sprint has done so much to continue all the great work at Four Corners. We truly appreciate you.”

The Four Corners facility also showcases how landfill areas can benefit the community beyond providing a necessary place for community waste,” Swinbank adds. “Many people don’t realize landfills like ours and the surrounding acreage make ideal parks and recreation areas,” Swinbank explains. “Our landfill only accepts construction and building waste, rather than raw commercial or household waste, so when our landfill reaches the end of its life as a landfill, it can still benefit the area.”
