Sprint Waste Mentors Safety Excellence Award Winners

Sprint Waste Services will serve as a 2016 Mentor at the 29th Annual Houston Safety Excellence Awards, presented tonight at the Moody Gardens Hotel, Spa and Convention Center in Galveston, Texas.

Hosted annually by the Houston Business Roundtable and the Houston Area Safety Council, the Safety Excellence Awards recognize greater Houston-area contractors for outstanding safety performance and bring owner companies and industrial contractors together in a cooperative effort to improve on-site safety, eliminate incidents and reduce employee injuries.

The awards banquet is a culmination of a six-month process that involves the efforts of hundreds of participants and volunteers. A unique feature of the awards is the requirement that winners share the practices that led to their achievement. Winners participate in a best-practices seminar so other contractor companies can learn and improve, and all participants foster an attitude of continual safety improvement, according to the Houston Business Roundtable.

Mentoring is a relatively new feature of the awards process, with mentors providing assistance to nominated contractors as they complete submission information and prepare for field audits. Mentors also help select contractors to be audited and lead field-audit teams.

Sprint Waste became a mentor this year after winning best-in-class honors in 2015 and earning bronze honors the two previous years for our work at ExxonMobil’s refinery and petrochemical facility in Baytown, Texas.

Oscar Ayala, HSE manager, represented Sprint Waste in the mentoring process. “Serving as a mentor this year was not only an excellent way to give back to the process, but it also gave us valuable learning that we can share with our team and our customers,” Ayala said. “The innovative ideas, achievements and talent among this year’s award recipients and our fellow mentors were absolutely inspiring.”
