Sprint Waste 'Passes the Torch' at Safety Excellence Awards

Sprint Waste Services was honored May 20 at the 29th Annual Houston Safety Excellence Awards in Galveston, serving as a 2016 Mentor alongside last year’s Best In Class winners. The 2016 mentoring companies included S&B Engineers and Construction Ltd., Repcon Inc., HydroChem LLC and Evergreen Industrial Services, among others.

More than 1,500 people attended the awards banquet, taking place annually to recognize world-class safety achievement among Houston-area contractors and industrial service providers. Sponsored by the Houston Business Roundtable and the Houston Area Safety Council, the awards specifically seek to improve safety at facilities along the Gulf Coast with its unique and rigorous process for mentoring and sharing of winning best practices.

“Sharing best practices is at the heart of everything HBR and the Houston Area Safety Council stand for,” according to the awards organizers. “It is understood that together we stand stronger than we do alone. Mentors pass the torch with their powerful knowledge.”

Mentors assist nominated contractors as they complete submission information and prepare for field audits. Mentors also participate in the judging process by helping select contractors to be audited and by helping to lead field-audit teams.

Sprint Waste became a mentor this year after winning best-in-class honors in 2015 and earning bronze honors the two previous years for our work at ExxonMobil’s refinery and petrochemical facility in Baytown, Texas. Oscar Ayala, Sprint Waste’s health, safety and environmental manager, attended this year’s event with John Marion, environmental superintendent at ExxonMobil Baytown.

Following recognition as a mentor, companies are then prohibited from competing the following year, a rule meant to encourage participation from a wider range of area contractors.
